Knowing the most popular clothing styles on Poshmark will enhance your reselling business. If you're listing styles nobody likes, you won't likely make sales.

I've wrote a blog on, in my experience, the most popular brands and styles on Poshmark. For a lot of places, it's still hot outside, so today I want to focus on dresses specifically.

Before we begin, I want to note that this list is based off of my experience. Feel free to leave a comment with your most commonly sold dress styles.

The examples of each dresses are listings that, at the time I wrote this, are available for purchase. I've linked each listing I shared. Check them out before they sell!

1. What is a straight or shift dress?

Straight dresses (sometimes referred to as sheath dresses) are a more square and straight figure. They usually fall around the knee, making them great for business or professional settings.

Shift dresses are very similar but a little more loose. They tend to hang from your shoulders and prove no structure.

Unfortunately, I've noticed these styles don't often work well with curvy people. The dress can get snug around curvy hips but appear baggy around a slimmer waste.

I recommend, If purchasing on Poshmark, to ask the seller for measurements before purchase.

This Vince Camuto dress, found in erinjane2378's closet is new with tags(NWT)! If you aren't familiar, NWT is a popular and commonly used Poshmark acronym.

2. What is a bodycon dress?

Bodycon dresses are similar to shift/straight dresses. The main difference in the material is tighter, meant to hug your body.

If the dress isn't skin tight, it can be great for business settings. If the bodycon dress is skin tight, they are typically worn for nights out.

This style of dress may look better for people with curvy hips and slimmer wastes, unlike the straight dress.

3. What is an A-line dress?

There is a lot of different descriptions for A-line, it can be hard to know exactly when a dress is classified as A-line.

The simplest definition that works for me, is a dress that is pulled in at your natural waste line. I've noticed these style of dresses also have triangular tops, like the example below.

This A-line dress could be complete with a pair of black strappy heels. Find the dress at etta_jones closet.

4. What is a babydoll dress?

Babydoll dresses cinch in above the natural waist line, right under the breast area. From the cinched area, the dress will flow out.

This design is most often seen as tops, but the babydoll dress is starting to become popular, especially in the younger generations.

The example below is pretty short for my liking, but others may love it and it's a great example of a babydoll style from a popular brand, Zara.

This mini babydoll dress can be found in lovelymely's closet.

5. What is a wrap dress?

Wrap dresses are pretty self explanatory. A section of the dress, usually in the middle section, will wrap around the waist.

This style can come with a variety of different dresses. They can be seen on short or long dresses or spaghetti strap or long sleeves.

The example below is seen with a spaghetti strap top.

6. What is a skater dress?

Skater dresses typically have tighter tops, cinch at the waist, and flow out into a flowy skirt.

These skirts are fun because they twirl when you spin! This style also comes in a skirt form, the skater skirt.

These dresses are considered mini dresses as well, falling above the knee, and are popular with the younger generations.

7. What is a maxi dress?

Simply put, Maxi dressed go all the way to your feet. These dresses are versatile and can be worn to many different occasions, depending on the style or color.

The top half of the dress can come in different designs, A-line, long-sleeve, spaghetti strap, etc.

Check out hiddensurprise's closet for this summer/beach fun maxi dress, at a great price too!

8. What is a halter dress?

On a halter style dress, the top will come up around the neck, like the picture below.

This design also comes as blouses, halter tops, which is another popular style.

This steal of a deal can be found in shananh's closet.

9. What is a peplum dress?

Peplum dresses cinch in around the waste and a small portion of the dress flares out.

Peplum shirts are another popular version of the trend. The shirt will cinch in at the waste and the rest of the shirt will flare out.

For the example below, the seller listed the dress as a sheath dress, which it also is. From my understanding, sheath is another term for straight dress. The term 'sheath' is not commonly used on Poshmark, so I stick to classifying them as straight dresses.

Despite this example being listed as a sheath dress, I thought it was a perfect example of a fashionable peplum dress.

10. What is a midi or tea-length dress?

The midi-dress is any dress that falls below the knee, but before the ankle. This trend is also very popular in skirt style. Most major brands have this style out right now.

In my opinion the term 'tea-length' is outdated. It means the same thing, but if you're listing an item I would use the term midi.

This gorgeous Anthropologie midi dress is from my closet. Offers are welcomed!

11. What is a mermaid dress?

The mermaid dress is full or midi length dresses that cinch in below the knee and flares back out.

These dresses are popular for formal occasions and dances. The tops usually come in some form of an A-line design, accentuating one's chest and waist area.

This beautiful lilac mermaid dress comes from the 5 star seller, xo4esh! This listing is also an excellent example of taking and editing photos that increase sales.
