Today, we are comparing Poshmark and the Facebook Marketplace. We’ve sold on both for years and want to share the pros and cons of both resale sites. This showdown can be a bit unfair because you can sell anything on Facebook Marketplace; while Poshmark is clothes, accessories, and home decor. If you’re looking to sell toys, this might not be the best comparison. However, if you’re deciding which one to sell clothes and accessories on, this is the perfect article for you.

Let’s compare!

Counteroffer

Poshmark

The golden feature of Poshmark is the Counteroffer. Buyers have the ability to counter one of your items with a lower price. This is where you can negotiate and make more sells. Some people will try to low-ball you, but the beauty of this feature is that you can say yes or no.

Facebook Marketplace

To negotiate prices, a buyer has to message you through the Facebook messenger. From there, you can talk freely and are not limited to only responding with counter offers.

Two problems with the Facebook Marketplace:

1) If you choose to sell in your area and allow buyers to come to your home for pick up, you have to provide your address. While not having to pay shipping is nice, this adds a level of insecurity. We recommend checking out the buyer’s profile thoroughly and waiting to provide your address until you are positive that person will show up.

2) So, you are positive the person is going to show up. You set a time and provide your address. Seems set in stone, but unfortunately the marketplace is anything but reliable. In our experience, people almost never show up at the set time or, occasionally, don’t show up at all. Planning your day around a pickup, just to have them say “sorry, I lost track of time, can I come tomorrow?” is extremely frustrating and extremely frequent.

The Facebook Marketplace can be great to get rid of large items, like furniture, in a relatively quick time, without the hassle (or cost) of shipping. The ability to freely message allows for ease in answering potential buyers’ questions. We do utilize the Marketplace for items that we simply can’t sell on Poshmark.

However, whenever possible, we try to stick to Poshmark. Poshmark provides a level of security and consistency that the Facebook Marketplace simply can’t provide. In fact, none of the sites we have been using and evaluating the past several months live up to Poshmark’s features, ability to sell, or consistency. In our Reseller Showdown series (the past three blogs), Poshmark has been the clear winner each time.
